Lesson

ps2-7. Speaking is not just words

The tone of your voice, dragging the words out, raising your voice or lowering it, whispering, speaking with a melody abruptly, enunciating crisply, or slurring your comments are all part of speaking and communication. Use them wisely but don't be afraid to use them.

Practice

Use five different ways of saying the same thing to different kinds of people and make a video recording of it.
Explain this to:
  1. A senior citizen who is hard of hearing.
  2. A child.
  3. Whispering to a friend next to you in a movie theatre when the movie is playing.
  4. Someone in the back of the room who asked you to speak up.
  5. Your normal voice talking to your instructor.

Practice

ps2-7p. Speaking is not just words

Take one sentence from your speech and say it as if you are addressing these different situations.

You can also change the words if suitable. After trying it out, record your practice on video. No longer than two minute video for all.
  • A senior citizen who is hard of hearing.
  • A well-educated group of academics
  • Whispering to a friend next to you in a movie theatre when the movie is playing. Someone in the back of the room asked you to speak up.
  • our normal voice talking to your instructor.
