Lesson

ps1-1. Fearless public speaking

Most people have a terrible fear of speaking in front of a group. Yet the same people have no problem meeting their best friend for a cup of coffee and pouring their hearts out. So what's the difference?

The difference is trust. You get in front of that audience. Your nightmare is you can't trust them. They are out to get you. Judge, reject, and humiliate you.

Maybe so. But suppose they are a confrontative, nasty lot. Which you rather be, standing or sitting? And what about your adversaries? I would prefer me standing and them sitting behind a desk.

So start thinking that the speaker has the power, not the audience. Not only that, your speech has the potential to get everyone on your side, assuming they aren't all on your side to begin with.

Practice

ps1-1p. Fearless public speaking

Set up three chairs in front of you. On each chair is the type of person you fear speaking in front of. Give them each a name.

Stand in front of them and confront them however you wish for one to two minutes.

Be nice, be mad. Whatever helps convince them that you, the speaker, are in charge.

Make sure your video does not go over 2:00, so practice or set up a clock or have a friend signal when you have 30 seconds left.

Make sure the video is recording facing you.
