On-Site Exhibits

Imagine having your own exhibit of any size; you can easily set up anywhere, anytime.

That could be at a business or home, indoors or out, in a lavish hotel ballroom exhibiting 72 captioned photographs, or in a cramped studio apartment showing your best 12.

For years, I dreamed of having an on-site exhibit that could do all that. And for years, I worked to make that dream come true. Now it has. A better-than-museum-quality exhibit your audience can come to you, or perhaps even better, you take to your audience.

On-Site Exhibits features:
  • Easy for one person to set up.
  • Compact, lightweight, and easy to carry.
  • Flexible size that can expand to show any number of pictures.
  • All images can be set together at eye level, raised or lowered.
  • A wide range of options is available to enhance the presentation.
  • Each image caption is conveniently located at the same viewing level.

Like most photographers, I enjoy working alone, though we do not really work alone. We usually hire a local assistant, coordinator, or translator.
By alone, we mean we usually make creative decisions ourselves and bring in other helpers as needed. In effect, we are also the directors.

Most photographers make great storytellers. That is because we speak and write in pictures. You can see what we describe.

Taking pictures and telling stories comes naturally. But writing does not come naturally. It must be different in the brain because it is never as easy as seeing, which is what photography is all about.

But for a photographer who takes the time to study and practice writing, it opens up other media. And then those storytelling skills really come in handy.
I conscientiously sought out editors to teach me to write. It was a long, laborious process. I paid available editors at the Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press to go over my work and teach me how to write better. It absolutely requires using two parts of the brain. One is spontaneous and instant. The other is slow and methodical, with infinitely more decisions to make.
But film and video production, while visual formats, ironically, invariably starts with a script before the images are planned. And in Hollywood, that script comes from a published book.

So here are several situations where visual and intellectual

Let Me Be Your

Writing Coach

My coaching style

I believe that coaching is most effective through private one-on-one lessons. That should be 10% coach instruction and 90% student practice.

My lessons are short and simple. We cover one writing aspect at a time. You practice, we review your work, and you learn immediately how to improve it.

We don't worry about grammar. No long grammar lectures. We focus on what you want to say or write, then go over how to say it as easily as possible, in most cases using the words you already know.

The most important thing is not good grammar. It is whether the other person understands your message. Later, you will learn that good grammar will come automatically as you learn to organize your thoughts.

My writing and coaching background

For decades and decades, I have done almost every kind of non-fiction writing, including:
  • Private writing lessons ranging eight year old third grade students to ESL executives.
  • For 10 years I created a monthly travel, cuisine, or fashion double-page photo-text feature for the Asahi Weekly in Tokyo.
  • 503 published features - over 8,500 pages published worldwide in 24 countries
  • Wrote several camera manuals in Japan.
  • Ghostwriting letters for corporate executives and photographing entire magazines in Hong Kong.
  • Wrote and delivered dozens of lectures on American history for high school students throughout Scandinavia.
  • Studied with editors of the Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press in New York and Paris.
  • President of three Toastmasters Speaking Clubs in Los Angeles.
  • Led dozens of workshops on writing and public speaking throughout the Los Angeles County Library system.
