Still lifes are a great way to practice your composition and the frame of your picture.

For photographers, there are basically two kinds of styles. 

Use the widest aperture, focus on the main subject, and blur the background.

Or use the smallest aperture so most all of the shot appears in focus.

Shooting closed down, we see more details and textures.

So, consider focus and the overall sharpness as part of your still life composition.

Practice

ph4-4p. Still life

Get three fruits of the same kind. Pick ones that have no bruises or marks.
Create three images. 

Show one fruit and the table.

Make a picture showing two fruits together.

Make a picture with the three fruits. Take a few pictures arranging the fruits differently each time.

Observe which images you liked best.
