Trieste, Italy - There is such a thing.
And the Illy family, inventors of the espresso machine, the espresso served in most of Italy's upscale restaurants, ought to know.
Hint: the crema should be 7mm thick. There should be no see through coffee spots. And the color should be a dark rich burnt sienna-like color.
That's what I learned when I spent a day with the Illy family and got the grande tour as well as the grande taste.
For 24 months, I had a full page feature published in the Asahi Weekly, Tokyo, Japan. Each issue, I visited a different major city all over Europe.
Magnificent art deco coffee houses around since the beginning of the 20th century and were lucky enough to avoid being destroyed during WWI and WWII still exist.
And if they did manage to survive, they became National Historic Landmarks in their respective countries.
